cat. 🐈‍⬛

I didn't know what to do for my blog post, so I'm doing it on a random children's book series about cats, named Pete the Cat. Pete the Cat, written by Kimberly Dean and James Dean, is a picture book series for small children to read. I'll be discussing the symbolism and meaning of the first book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes

At first, Pete the cat gets brand new white shoes. He seems to be very excited with his white shoes, and starts singing about them. However, the story takes a big twist when Pete the cat happens to step in a large pile of strawberries randomly on the street. The strawberries then dye his white shoes red. The biggest mistake here from Pete the cat was getting white shoes in the first place. It could be assumed here that Pete the cat is a child cat, considering he also didn't see the big pile of strawberries on the sidewalk. Pete the cat doesn't let this get him sad though, and he starts to sing about his red shoes.

Then, he steps in a big pile of blueberries, which colors his shoes blue. Even though the dyes would probably mix into purple, instead they turn his shoes blue. He then starts singing about his blue shoes. He didn't learn from his previous mistake somehow, and I question why his parents would let him walk onto the strawberries and blueberries in the first place. The story goes on and he steps into a mud puddle. I think that this was the most realistic part of the story, apart from the fact that Pete the cat keeps stepping on random things on the sidewalk. This turns his shoes brown, and then sings about his brown shoes. Pete the cat can be seen as very optimistic and happy, no matter what happens to him.

Pete the cat then steps in a water bucket and the dyed shoes turn back white. He starts singing about his white, wet shoes. The moral of the story was that even if something bad happens, keep going on, and things can get better, from his shoes going from white to dyed to white again. This was a very beautiful but unrealistic story, so of course I would recommend this to small children.

  1. This book teaches a good lesson of not letting little things going wrong ruin your day, and to just keep moving. Fun choice!

  3. This is a nice story about optimism. But I have one question: did Pete the cat have 2 shoes, or four?

    1. When reading the book, Pete was wearing 4 shoes, which means he ruined 2 pairs of shoes when stepping in the stuff. Very sad πŸ˜”

  4. Hi, I remember reading this book as a small child and I really liked it. But now it does seem a little unrealistic, but the moral of the story is still important for anyone. Good job on your post!

  6. Yo Gemma, great blog post. Pete the Cat is kind of an admirable figure in the context of the book, and that even in the face of difficulty and struggle, to keep optimistic. Just as Pete did when he stepped in all that crap. You know, I might try that. I should try and step in something with some new white shoes and start singing about it.

  7. This was literally my favorite book when I was little... but I ironically kind of hated Pete? I would read it over and over just to complain about him for some reason.

  11. I really enjoyed reading this post. :)! As a kid, I used to read Pete the Cat all the time, along with many other stories. I agree with the lesson you gave in the post because it is a lesson many people use every day. Great post!
