A First Impression of "The Blood Meridian"
Recently, I checked out a book called The Blood Meridian. I had heard about it on YouTube, and it seemed interesting. The book has a reputation for being unfilmable. The video said that this book has a lot of violence, which makes people shy away from filming it. When I heard this I wondered why the author would include this violent content in his book, but the rest of the video that talked about that part of the book had major spoilers so I decided to not watch the rest of it and just check the book out for myself.
When looking up the author, Cormac Mcarthy, I found that he has written many other popular books like The Road and No Country for Old Men. I was surprised to see that he had written No Country for Old Men because I know that it's a popular movie. When I saw that I knew that Cormac Mcarthy was a good author, for his book to be made into a movie.
When I started reading the book the first thing I realized was the writing. It was poetic almost with every sentence. Then the use of third-person narration. The narrator never tells us the name of the main character he is only known as The Child. The book takes place in the Wild West so about 1880's. Cormac Mcarthy uses grammar, words, and opinions that many people would have at the time in his characters. I've only gotten through 50 pages of this book but it is very easy to get sucked into.
The characters are very interesting. The Child who is a fourteen-year-old boy, has to adapt to the world quickly because he just ran away from his home, and it is very interesting to see him get used to his surroundings. There is a hermit who The Child meets in a forest and their dialog is quite interesting, I won't spoil it here but the hermit is a character that I will remember.
I plan on finishing the book before we come back so I can write a full blog about it soon, the book is very interesting so far and I suggest anyone who likes Wild West stories to read.

I wonder why it's unfilmable? I know you mentioned the violence, but there are plenty of violent movies out there. Aside from that this seems like a pretty interesting book, especially with the almost poetic writing that you mention.
ReplyDeleteThe story seems pretty cool, and I wonder if there are other stories that are not able to be turned into films. I wonder if there would be a movie if the book got more attention. Nice post.
